born in New Haven, Connecticut, November 23, 1928. Bock grew up in Flushing, New York and, after studying the piano as a child, began composing songs when he was in his teens. He graduated from the University of Wisconsin with a music degree and began his Broadway career with lyricist Larry Holofcener. Their most successful collaboration was the 1956 Mister Wonderful, which starred Sammy Davis, Jr. Bock joined forces with lyricist Sheldon Harnick and together they crafted some of the most successful scores of the 1950s and '60s, including Fiorello (Pulitzer Prize 1960), She Loves Me (1963) and Fiddler On The Roof (1964). Bock and Harnick's last two shows together were The Apple Tree (1966) and The Rothschilds (1970).

Coming to New York from Philadelphia after attending Temple University and serving in the U.S. Air Force, he has been represented in New York City by the play The Warm Peninsula, the libretto for an operatic version of Eugene O'Neill's Desire Under the Elms and the book and lyrics for a recent production of Six Wives at the York Theatre Company.
was nominated twice for the Director Guild of America Award for best director of a comedy and won the award for The Alan Brady Show episode of Mad About You. He also directed episodes of Frasier, Coach and over 50 episodes of various sitcoms. He has just finished directing The Great American Songbook starring Michael Feinstein for the Mark Taper Forum, and this summer he will be directing My Fair Lady at the Hollywood Bowl (where last summer he directed The Music Man starring Eric McCormack and Kristin Chenoweth). His production of Stand-up Opera Starring B.J. Ward is currently on tour, and last year played the Adelaide Arts Festival in Australia. In New York he directed Black Water, an opera with libretto by Joyce Carol Oates at Cooper Union, and the Noel Coward All-Star Centennial Celebration at Carnegie Hall, and off Broadway he directed Shmulnik’s Waltz by Alan Knee with incidental music by David Shire. For the past 10 years he has directed the Mark Taper Salon Series, a yearly tribute to different lyricists, starring Michael Feinstein and various guest stars. Also at the Taper he created and directed a musical adaptation of Studs Terkel’s The Good War featuring, among others, Helen Hunt, Brian Stokes Mitchell and B.J. Ward. He has directed world premieres of a number of plays including A.R. Gurney’s The Middle Ages and Black by Joyce Carol Oates with Anthony Edwards and Felicity Huffman at the Williamstown Theater Festival (where he also directed A Little Night Music). He is the author of the best-selling theater book “How To Audition,” and as a lyricist he wrote the award winning song, Errol Flynn which he wrote with Amanda McBroom.

In addition to stage, they have designed extensively for television, for which they have received a combined 9 Emmy Awards and 19 Emmy Award nominations. Their television credits include General Hospital, Port Charles, Dick Clark's Your Big Break, The American Music Awards, and most recently, American Bandstand 50th Anniversary. Premiering in the fall of 2003, they have been chosen to design the costumes for a new national tour of Camelot.

On Broadway he assisted long time design partner Jon Gottlieb on 2001s If You Ever Leave Me I'm Coming With You. For television Mr. Allen assisted Emmy award winning sound designer Bruce Burns in the sound system design's for the 33rd Academy of Country Music Awards, the 56th and 59th Golden Globe Awards and 14th Soap Opera Awards. As a mixer he served as Production Sound Engineer for Thoroughly Modern Millie at La Jolla Playhouse before its move to Broadway and was the head soundman for the national tour of Titanic. In 1997 he engineered the gala production Saturday Night at the Summit attended by Bill Clinton and the leaders of the G-7 countries. He won the 2001 Ovation Award for Sound Design for Flower Drum Song, and the 1999 LA Drama Critics Circle Award with Jon Gottlieb for their sound design of Cinderella, as well as five LA Dramalogue Awards for Outstanding Achievement in Sound Design, and two Ovation Award nominations for Best Sound Design.
